Have you ever looked at someone in a yoga pose and thought, "pshhht, that doesn't look so hard," and then done that pose yourself only to find your legs burning or your arms shaking or sweat breaking out on your forehead? That's because it's not always hitting the pose itself that's so effective (sure I can bend a knee and put my arm in the air) but holding the pose for a period of time.
If you were to fly through your yoga flow without slowing to the proper pace, you would be doing yourself an injustice. What's the point of a chaturanga if you just drop weightlessly from plank to your mat? (Non-yogis, bear with me.) It's the resistance that strengthens you, and it's the moments where you're still that you're able to become more aware of the details. You can square your hips, drop your shoulder, deepen that bend in your knee, engage your arms.
Amidst all this talk of goal setting and thinking big and demanding more of ourselves, I wanted to take a moment to remind you that even with the volume turned up so loud, there are times when you'll have to hit pause to let the work you're doing take effect. Just like that yoga pose, your incredibly ambitious list of to-do's and to-be's is pointless if you don't let the process of accomplishing each thing challenge you, strengthen you, and change you. It matters also that you enjoy the journey.
It is imperative that you remember to breathe - that sometimes all you do is breathe.
Breathe. Listen. Wait. Revel. Clarify. Focus.
Then when you press play again, the music will be so much sweeter.
